Government Policy Shift Puts Dorset SubCo on Hold

Government Policy Shift Puts Dorset SubCo on Hold

Big news: the government has announced a major change in national NHS policy that could stop thousands of staff being outsourced into private-style companies (known as SubCos).

From now on, new SubCos will only go ahead if they have clear trade union support. Proposals currently under review — including Dorset’s plan to move 1,700 porters, cleaners, caterers and more into a SubCo, are paused with immediate effect while a consultation takes place.

This comes just days after Dorset UNISON members held protests and voted overwhelmingly for strike action to defend their NHS jobs. Workers raised serious concerns that the SubCo would create a two-tier workforce, undermining pay, pensions, and conditions.

UNISON’s response

UNISON General Secretary Christina McAnea welcomed the announcement:

“Today’s announcement is a positive step in the right direction and shows ministers are listening to the union’s warnings. Subsidiary companies have never been the right way to deliver NHS services. NHS staff deserve the same pay and conditions as the rest of the workforce.”

What it means for Dorset

  • The SubCo plan is now paused.
  • Trusts can’t push it forward without UNISON backing.
  • Consultation will happen nationally and locally — meaning our voices must be heard.

Why this matters

This shows the power of collective action. Staff organising, protesting, and standing together made the difference. The fight isn’t over yet, but this is a huge step towards protecting NHS workers and keeping the NHS together.

💬 “They said it couldn’t be stopped. But we’ve forced them to hit pause. Now we push on until it’s scrapped for good.”
